How Do You Know If You’re Pregnant?

One of the most reliable ways to determine if you’re pregnant is by taking a pregnancy test. You have a couple of options:

  • Visit a Healthcare Provider: You can schedule an appointment with a doctor or nurse, or visit a community health center, where they can provide a medical-grade pregnancy test and offer additional support. The Keim Centers offer much more than just a pregnancy test—we provide compassionate care, resources, and ongoing support tailored to your specific needs in a welcoming environment.
  • At-Home Pregnancy Tests: Over-the-counter pregnancy tests are available at most drugstores and supermarkets. These tests are convenient and highly accurate when used correctly.

Understanding Pregnancy Tests

Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. This hormone is produced after a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of your uterus.

  • Accuracy: Home pregnancy tests are about 99% accurate when used after a missed period.
  • Timing: For the most reliable result, take the test after you’ve missed your period. Testing too early can sometimes lead to inaccurate results.
  • Instructions: Always check the expiration date and follow the instructions carefully.

If you take a test and are unsure about the result or have more questions, please feel free to come in to the Keim Centers, and we’ll assist you further.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy

While a missed period is the most common sign, there are other symptoms you might notice:

  • Light Bleeding or Spotting: Known as implantation bleeding, it can occur when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus lining.
  • Tender or Swollen Breasts: Hormonal changes might make your breasts sensitive.
  • Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired is common in early pregnancy.
  • Bloating: Hormonal shifts can cause bloating, similar to what you might experience before your period.
  • Increased Urination: You may feel the need to urinate more often.
  • Mood Swings: Hormone fluctuations can affect your emotions.
  • Nausea or Vomiting: This is often referred to as “morning sickness,” though it can happen at any time of day.

Remember, everyone is different. Some people experience many of these symptoms, while others might have none.

Additionally, these symptoms can also be related to stress, diet, or other health conditions.

Can You Get Pregnant While on Birth Control?

Birth control methods are highly effective when used correctly, but no method is 100% foolproof except abstinence. Factors that can decrease effectiveness include:

  • Missing Doses: Not taking birth control pills consistently at the same time each day.
  • Incorrect Use: Misusing condoms or other barrier methods.
  • Interactions: Certain medications or supplements can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control.

Using condoms along with another form of birth control can provide extra protection against pregnancy and also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
