Before making your appointment with an abortion clinic, here are some questions to consider:

How Can I Be Sure I’m Pregnant?

A positive pregnancy test alone should never be used in making an abortion decision, as about 1 in 4 pregnancies, or up to 25% end in miscarriage. Furthermore, some pregnancies occur outside of the uterus, which is known as an ectopic pregnancy. This is a rare condition but can be life-threatening. Due to these types of potential complications, an abortion may not be necessary.

It is in your best interest to confirm your pregnancy by ultrasound before pursuing an abortion. At The Norfolk Keim Center, we can provide a laboratory-grade pregnancy test and limited ultrasound, all at no cost to you. An ultrasound is the only way to confirm a viable intrauterine pregnancy, meaning there is a heartbeat in the uterus, where it is supposed to be. This ultrasound can also determine how far along you are. This is vital information for you to determine what options you have for the potential pregnancy. For your health and safety, we will also give you a detailed list of important questions to ask the abortion provider before your procedure.

What Are My Abortion Options?

The abortion options that will be available to you are based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. This is determined by an ultrasound, which we provide at our Norfolk location at no cost. Different types of abortion procedures include:

  • Methotrexate (MTX)
  • Abortion Pill / Mifeprex / Mifepristone (RU-486)
  • Suction Dilation and Curettage (Suction D&C)
  • Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
  • Intra-cardiac Injection

The Abortion Pill

Also known as a medical or chemical abortion, the abortion pill is the most common abortion procedure. With the abortion pill, there are two steps. First, you take a set of pills called mifepristone which stops the pregnancy from growing by blocking your body’s progesterone. After taking mifepristone, you are sent home and then take misoprostol within 48 hours. Misoprostol induces uterine cramping and bleeding. Everything inside the uterus will be passed at home after taking this second set of medications. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection and/or narcotic pain medication, as cramping may be severe.

How Effective Is the Abortion Pill?

The effectiveness of the abortion pill is based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. This can be determined by an ultrasound that we can provide to you at no cost. If you are considering the abortion pill or are unsure what options might be best for you, schedule a same-day appointment at our Norfolk office to speak to one of our licensed medical professionals today.
