Before making your appointment with an abortion clinic, here are some questions to consider:
How Can I Be Sure I’m Pregnant?
A positive pregnancy test alone should never be used in determining an abortion decision, as it’s important to know that 15-20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Additionally, some pregnancies occur outside of the uterus, also known as an ectopic pregnancy. Should these complications arise, an abortion may not be needed.
It’s also important to know that the state of Virginia requires individuals to receive an ultrasound before receiving an abortion. The Virginia Beach Keim Center can provide an FDA-approved laboratory-grade pregnancy test and ultrasound at no cost to you. The ultrasound is necessary to confirm a viable uterine pregnancy, cardiac activity, and how far along you are. For your health and safety, we will also provide you with a list of important questions to ask the abortion provider before your procedure.
What are my abortion options?
Your abortion options are based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. This is determined by an ultrasound, which we offer to you at our Virginia Beach location at no cost.
Types of abortion procedures include:
- Methotrexate (MTX)
- Abortion Pill / Mifeprex / Mifepristone (RU-486)
- Suction Dilation and Curettage (Suction D&C)
- Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
- Dilation and Extraction (D&X) / Intact Dilation and Extraction (IDE)
- Intra-cardiac Injection
The Abortion Pill
The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, is among the most common abortion procedures. With this abortion option, there are two steps. First, you take a pill called mifepristone which stops the pregnancy from growing by blocking your body’s progesterone. After taking mifepristone, you then take misoprostol within 48 hours. Misoprostol induces a similar experience to a heavy period and is like a miscarriage. In some cases, antibiotics will be prescribed to prevent infection.
How Effective Is the Abortion Pill?
The effectiveness of the abortion pill comes down to how far along in your pregnancy you are. This can be determined by an ultrasound that we can provide to you at no cost at our Virginia Beach office. If you’re considering the abortion pill or are unsure what options might be best for you, set-up a same day appointment to speak to one of our licensed medical professionals.
