Abortion Clinic Counseling in Portsmouth
Unplanned pregnancies happen. If you’re currently facing a mistimed pregnancy and considering abortion, it is for your health and safety that you receive all the education possible. The Portsmouth Keim Center provides objective information and medical resources on all reproductive options so that you can make a confident and fully informed decision when it comes to pregnancy and abortion.
Before scheduling your appointment with an abortion clinic, here are some questions to consider:
Am I Sure I’m Pregnant?
A single positive pregnancy test alone should never be used in determining an abortion decision, as 15-20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Additionally, some pregnancies occur outside of the uterus, also known as an ectopic pregnancy, and due to these potential complications, an abortion may not be needed.
Did you know that the state of Virginia legally requires individuals to receive an ultrasound prior to receiving an abortion? The Portsmouth Keim Center offers FDA-approved laboratory-grade pregnancy tests and reviews your results with you, all at no cost. If your test is positive, we may recommend an ultrasound that we can provide at our Virginia Beach, Norfolk or Chesapeake office. The ultrasound is necessary to confirm a viable uterine pregnancy, cardiac activity, and how far along you are. For your health and safety, we also provide you with a list of important questions to ask the abortion provider prior to your procedure.
What Abortion Options Are There?
The different abortion options available to you are based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. This can be determined by an ultrasound, which is provided at our Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake locations at no cost.
Types of abortion procedures include:
- Methotrexate (MTX)
- Abortion Pill / Mifeprex / Mifepristone (RU-486)
- Suction Dilation and Curettage (Suction D&C)
- Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
- Dilation and Extraction (D&X) / Intact Dilation and Extraction (IDE)
- Intra-cardiac Injection
The Abortion Pill
The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, is among the most common abortion procedures. With the abortion pill, there are two steps. First, you take a pill called mifepristone which stops the pregnancy from growing by blocking your body’s progesterone. After taking mifepristone, you then take misoprostol within 48 hours, which induces a similar experience to a heavy period and is like a miscarriage. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
Will the Abortion Pill Work for Me?
The abortion pill’s effectiveness depends on how far along in your pregnancy you are. This is determined by an ultrasound that we can provide to you at no cost at our Virginia Beach, Norfolk or Chesapeake office. If you’re thinking the abortion pill or are unsure what options might be best for you, set up a same-day appointment today to speak to one of our licensed medical professionals.
