Abortion Clinic Counseling in Chesapeake
Mistimed pregnancies happen. If you’re currently facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering abortion, it is for your health and safety that you receive all the education possible. The Chesapeake Keim Center provides objective information and medical resources on all reproductive options so that you can make a confident and fully informed decision when it comes to pregnancy and abortion.
Before making your appointment with an abortion clinic, here are some questions to consider:
Am I Sure I’m Pregnant?
A single pregnancy test alone should never be used in making an abortion decision, as about 15-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Furthermore, some pregnancies occur outside of the uterus, which is known as an ectopic pregnancy. Due to these types of complications, an abortion may not be needed.
It is important to know that the state of Virginia legally requires individuals to receive an ultrasound before receiving an abortion. At the Chesapeake Keim Center, we can provide an FDA-approved laboratory-grade pregnancy test and ultrasound, all at no cost to you. The ultrasound is necessary to confirm a viable uterine pregnancy, cardiac activity, and how far along you are. For your health and safety, we will also give you a detailed list of important questions to ask the abortion provider before your procedure.
What Are My Abortion Options?
The abortion options that will be available to you are based on how far along you are in your pregnancy. How far along you are is determined by an ultrasound, which we provide at our Chesapeake location at no cost.
Different types of abortion procedures include:
- Methotrexate (MTX)
- Abortion Pill / Mifeprex / Mifepristone (RU-486)
- Suction Dilation and Curettage (Suction D&C)
- Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
- Dilation and Extraction (D&X) / Intact Dilation and Extraction (IDE)
- Intra-cardiac Injection
The Abortion Pill
Also known as a medical abortion, the abortion pill is among the most common abortion procedures. With the abortion pill, there are two steps. First, you take a pill called mifepristone which stops the pregnancy from growing by blocking your body’s progesterone. After taking mifepristone, you then take misoprostol within 48 hours, which induces a similar experience to a heavy period and is like a miscarriage. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
How Effective Is the Pill?
The effectiveness of the abortion pill is based on how far along in your pregnancy you are. This can be determined by an ultrasound that we can provide to you at no cost at our Chesapeake office. If you’re thinking the abortion pill or are unsure what options might be best for you, schedule a same day appointment to speak to one of licensed medical professionals today.
